Except for cooking and gardening and washing his dog, he never learned to savor the work of his hands. And then he finds a derelict nativity scene-twenty figures, including a flock of sheep, that have suffered the indignities of time and neglect.
Could he give the small company new life? Restore the camel's ear, repaint every piece, replace a missing nose on a wise man? "You can't teach an old dog new tricks!" he reminds himself. It's when he imagines the excitement in Cynthia's eyes that he steps up to the plate-and begins a small journey of faith that touches everyone around him.
The eighth novel in the bestselling Mitford Years series is a meditation on the best of all presents-the gift of one's heart. Lovingly written and beautifully illustrated, it seeks to restore the true Christmas spirit and give everyone a seat at Mitford's holiday table.
"This Mitford story presented itself to me, quite unexpectedly, and asked to be told. I hope readers will find it a perfect refuge from the holiday frenzy." -Jan Karon | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

very entertaining readingMar 23, 2009 I loved this series and wish Jan Karon would have continued it for a few more books
ExcellentJan 30, 2009 I was completely satisfied with my product. It arrived within the specified time, it was new (as advertised), and the price was excellent.
Shepherds AbidingJan 29, 2009 Jan Karon is a wonderful author. I just wish she wrote more books than the Mitford Series. She can make you feel like you actually live in Mitford and are a neighbor or friend of all of her characters.
New Tradition!Jan 01, 2009 I seldom read a book twice, but Shepherds Abiding is an exception. It was actually the first book I read in The Mitford Years series, which led me to read the rest of the series. This book was so endearing and provided such sweet sanctuary each evening during the Christmas holidays last year, that I decided to read it this year also. And I look forward to reading it, again, next Christmas season.
SHEPHERDS ABIDINGDec 24, 2008 EVERY CHRISTMAS EVE SINCE 2005 WHEN THIS BOOK WAS RELEASED, I HAVE LISTENED TO THE WONDERFUL STORY TOLD IN "SHEPHERDS ABIDING," PROBABLY MY FAVORITE OF THE NINE TITLES IN THE MITFORD SERIES. ALTHOUGH IT IS WONDERFUL TO READ THE STORIES OF THE PEOPLE OF MITFORD, I THINK LISTENING TO THIS IS SO COMFORTING BECAUSE OF THE MUSIC AND BECAUSE OF THE VOICE OF NARRATOR, JOHN MCDONOUGH. (PLEASE EXCUSE THE CAPS. I AM NOT YELLING. BUT I DO HAVE VISION PROBLEMS).
THE TITLES IN THE MITFORD SERIES ARE:
(1)At Home in Mitford (The Mitford Years, Book 1)
(2)A Light in the Window (The Mitford Years, Book 2)
(3)These High, Green Hills
(4)Out to Canaan (The Mitford Years, Book 4)
(5)A New Song (The Mitford Years, Book 5)
(6)A Common Life (The Mitford Years, Book 6)
(7)In This Mountain (The Mitford Years, Book 7)
(8)Shepherds Abiding [UNABRIDGED CD] (Audiobook) (Book 8, The Mitford Series)
(9)Light from Heaven (The Mitford Years, Book 9).
I WOULD RECOMMEND READING BOOK SIX AFTER YOU READ BOOK TWO. THEN CONTINUE WITH BOOK THREE AND SO ON. IT SEEMS TO ME MS. KARON HAD A DEADLINE TO MEET AND DECIDED TO TELL US THE WEDDING STORY OF FATHER TIMOTHY CAVANAUGH AND CYNTHIA COOPERSMITH, AND THEN CONTINUE WITH HER STORY OF THE MITFORD COMMUNITY.
