One Square Mile of Hell: The Battle for Tarawa

Description:

In November 1943, the men of the 2nd Marine Division watched as bombardments destroyed the Japanese defenses on an islet in the Tarawa atoll. But when the Marines landed, the Japanese poured out of their protective bunkers and began one of the most brutal encounters of the war.

During the ensuing three days of non-stop fighting, the entire island was transformed into an all-encompassing kill zone in which combatants found themselves mixed together in a chaotic hell of crossfires, where there was no possibility of retreat-because there was nowhere to retreat to.

Drawn from sources such as participants' letters, diaries, and interviews with survivors, this is the riveting true account of a battle between two determined foes, neither of whom would ever look at each other the same way again.

It describes what war is (and was). It should be entered into reluctantly, and only when all other options fail.

5A story about brave menJul 02, 2009
A good story about several brave young men who became warriors and fought for their counrty on the beaches of Tarawa. These men had to wade ashore from hundreds of yards out through withering machine gun fire to assault a beach that had been said could not be taken in a hundred years. These men defied all logic and rewrote the book on amphibious landings with their bravery and determination. A great book that everyone needs to read.

5A must read!Jun 29, 2009
This is one of the best books on the fighting in the Pacific I've ever read. The author weaves together a cast of characters and then follows them through the 76 hours of hell which ensued in the battle for Tarawa. Rather than give a detached view of the battle which reports on advances made by units here and there, Wukovits tells the story of the battle from almost an entirely personal level via interviews and previously published sources. There is even some of the story told from the Japanese perspective, which is exceedingly rare since most Japanese troops didn't survive the battle.

This book belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in the Pacific Theatre in World War II, as well as anyone interested in the history of the U.S. Marines. A truly great read!

5Outstanding work by Mr. WukovitsMay 30, 2009
I at times felt like I was there with the Marines----graphic, very real descriptions of what it was like to confront a more than determined enemy & ultimately take that small island. I felt like I almost personally knew some of the Marines & their families. One of the best ( if not the best ) military history book I've ever read.

5One Square Mile of HellOct 09, 2008
I think that "With the Old Breed" by E.B. Sledge, is the best WWII book ever written. In my opinion, "One Square Mile of Hell" is second best. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Military History.
