With her richly textured novels, Susan Vreeland has offered pioneering portraits of artists’ lives. Now, as she did in Girl in Hyacinth Blue, Vreeland once again focuses on a single painting—Auguste Renoir’s instantly recognizable masterpiece, which depicts a gathering of Renoir’s real friends enjoying a summer Sunday on a café terrace along the Seine. Narrated by Renoir and seven of the models, the novel illuminates the gusto, hedonism, and art of the era. With a gorgeous palette of vibrant, captivating characters, Vreeland paints their lives, loves, losses, and triumphs so vividly that “the painting literally comes alive” (The Boston Globe). | | | Product Details: | | | Author:

BOOK WAS IN GREAT CONDITION. QUICK SERVICE BY AMAZON THANK YOU!
I ENJOYED THE BOOK VERY MUCH. BOUGHT A POSTER OF THE PAINTING ON THE COVER OF THE BOOK TO USE AS ATMOSPHERE FOR MY BOOK CLUB GATHERING IN OCT. LOOOKING FORWARD TO OTHER PEOPLES BOOK REVIEW. I THOUGHT THE IDEA OF BUILDING A STORY AROUND THE PEOPLE IN THE PAINTING WAS VERY CLEVER. YOU FELT THAT YOU WERE IN PARIS!
get to know this paintingOct 09, 2009 i can not think of better way to get to know a painting than to take ms vreeland's tour of ninteenth century Paris.
Wonderful Absorbing ReadOct 08, 2009 Absorbing, well-paced, populated by a cast of varied characters. Not light literature, not fluff. History and Art History buffs and general fiction / literature readers enjoy this one.
Luncheon of the Boating PartySep 14, 2009 I enjoyed this historical perspective of Paris and the impressionist movement. The author's vivid language captures the painting process used by Renoir and really made his struggles come alive. I also gained an enhanced appreciation for the challenges faced by the impressionist painters that goes way beyond what I learned in my Art History class in college. However, just as Renoir struggled with trying to paint so many models, I also struggled with trying to keep all the characters straight and found the narrative very confusing when trying to place the characters in the painting.
Enchanting and Even Better the Second TimeAug 22, 2009 The Luncheon of the Boating Party is an enchanting novel. I just finished re-reading the book and appreciated it even more the second time through. This is not intended to be a quick read, but a book to be savored.
I thoroughly enjoyed the stories of Parisian life as seen through the eyes of Renoir's friends. Each one provides a glimpse into the life and times of the Impressionists. But most of all, I treasure Susan Vreeland's description of the creative process. She takes us inside Renoir's mind as he creates his masterpiece, so that we can watch the birth of the painting. Quite an accomplishment! This novel is lovingly conceived and beautifully written --I can't recommend it enough.
